Nel Aerts
Nel Aerts (Turnhout, BE, 1987) bevraagt in haar tekeningen en schilderijen, die eruit zien als uit de hand gelopen houtsneden, performatieve video's en sculpturale installaties hoe verschillende media, artistieke roeping en de wereld zich tot elkaar verhouden. Dat doet ze aan de hand van een mix van tragedie, poëzie, fictie, humor en kunsthistorische referenties. Humor, eenzaamheid, verdriet, taboe, escapisme, de reis, de boottocht, optimisme, het masker/de maskerade - het zijn allemaal elementen die terugkomen in haar schilderijen, collages, sculpturen en acties. Tegelijkertijd getuigen haar praktijk en werk ook van een hardnekkig geloof in de creatieve, materiële en ontroerende krachten van de hedendaagse kunst.
Nel Aerts (b. 1987, Turnhout, BE) questions in her drawings and paintings, which look like out-of-control woodcuts, performative videos and sculptural installations how various media, artistic calling and the world relate to each other. She does so through a mix of tragedy, poetry, fiction, humor and art historical references. Humor, loneliness, sadness, taboo, escapism, the journey, the boat trip, optimism, the mask/masquerade - all of these are elements that recur in her paintings, collages, sculptures and actions. At the same time her practice and work also bear witness to a stubborn faith in the creative, material and moving powers of contemporary art.
