Van dichtbij is te zien dat dit schilderij is opgebouwd uit ontelbare kleine kleurvlakken. Bij het maken van dit werk werd Jan Toorop beïnvloed door het pointillisme, een methode die was ontwikkeld door de Franse schilder Georges Seurat (1859-1891). Hierbij plaatst de schilder kleine stipjes (pointilles) onvermengde verf naast elkaar. Vanaf een afstand lijkt het alsof er kleurvlakken zijn geschilderd. Door deze techniek ontstaan heldere, soms bijna lichtgevende composities. Toorop was één van de eerste volgelingen van het pointillisme buiten Frankrijk.
De laatste jaren van de 19de eeuw woonde Toorop in Katwijk. Voor de pointillisten was de zee een ideale omgeving. De sterke reflecties van water, licht en lucht inspireerden hen optimaal tot gebruik van hun geliefde stippelmethode.
Op dit schilderij heeft Toorop uitbundig gebruik gemaakt van het spel van licht en kleur dat hij waarnam bij de sluizen van Katwijk. De boot wordt met talloze kleurvlekjes in het sprankelende water weerspiegeld. Met sliertige bewegingen heeft hij het opwaaiende zand links weergegeven. De lila schaduwen, die over het midden van de compositie lopen, verlenen het werk een lichte, onwerkelijke sfeer.

From close quarters it is possible to see that this painting is made up of countless small dabs of colour. It was influenced by pointillism, a method developed by French painter Georges Seurat (1859-1891), whereby the painter would apply small dots (pointilles) of unmixed colours alongside each other. From a distance they resemble planes of a single colour. The technique creates bright, almost luminous compositions. Toorop was one of the first exponents of pointillism outside France.
Toorop lived in Katwijk in the final years of the 19th century. The sea was the ideal setting for the pointillists, the strong reflections of water, light and sky providing the perfect inspiration for their beloved dotting method.
In this painting Toorop made full use of the play of light and colour that he observed at the lock gates near Katwijk. The boat’s reflection in the sparkling water is made up of countless dabs of colour. The wispy brushwork on the left depicts drifting sand. The lilac shadows across the centre of the composition give the work a light, unreal atmosphere.
