Neo Rauch

Neo Rauch (b. Leipzig, 1960) is one of the most important artists working today. His work, which took the art world by storm, manages to avoid the predictable rhythm that seems to have dictated the development of the arts over the past few decades.

Neo Rauch studied with Arno Rink at the famous Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig, at a time when Germany and Europe were still divided. The focus in Leipzig was on painting, and the art that emerged from there was regarded as unfashionable in the international art world. Neo Rauch’s work broke through this isolation, attracting praise all over the world from the 1990s onwards. His paintings take the viewer to a recognisable world. However, after the initial sensation of familiarity, on closer inspection they cause confusion, even alarm. Human existence in its many layers, in interaction and in isolation, crashes down on us like waves. Neo Rauch fills his paintings with his dreams, visions, companions and fellow travellers. They become part of us, as if they are breathing, their obtrusive presence bringing us comfort, or food for thought. The work of Neo Rauch celebrates the power of art and painting, and proclaims looking at paintings to be a vital necessity of life.
