Karel Appel (1921-2006) was in 1948 een van de oprichters van de kunstenaarsgroep CoBrA De naam ontleenden de initiatiefnemers aan de beginletters van de steden waaruit ze afkomstig waren: Copenhagen, Brussel en Amsterdam. Maar een cobra is ook een slang die agressief wordt als hij in zijn vrijheid wordt beknot. Daar herkenden de Cobra-kunstenaars zich in: hun eigen vrijheid was jarenlang beperkt geweest door de oorlog en de heersende normen in de kunst. Om zich hiervan los te maken lieten zij zich inspireren door de kleurige, spontane kunst van kinderen en geesteszieken.

In de reeks Le Roi Couronné, Koning en de hofnar en King Lear uit 1962, behandelt Karel Appel de verf als materie. Schilderen is voor hem een fysieke daad en dit maakt het werk rauw. In de drie werken speelt een koning een rol als hoofdpersoon. Door de directe explosie van verf brengt Appel de koning, die normaal op afstand is, verbazingwekkend dichtbij. De werken refereren aan de legendarische koning Lear uit Groot-Brittannië, later hoofdpersoon in Shakespears tragedie. Een verhaal over oprechtheid, bedrog en verzoening.

Karel Appel (1921-2006) was one of the founders of the CoBrA group. Established in 1948, the name is derived from the first letters of the cities from which the founders came: Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam. But a cobra is also a snake that becomes aggressive if its freedom is curtailed. The Cobra artists identified with this: for years their freedom had been curtailed by the war and the prevailing norms in art. In order to free themselves, they drew inspiration from the colourful spontaneous art of children and the mentally ill.

In his series Le Roi Couronné, The King and the Court Jester and King Lear of 1962 Karel Appel handles his paint as matter. Painting is a physical act here, and this gives the work a raw quality. In the three works, the king is the protagonist. The immediacy of the explosion of paint on the canvas brings the king, who is normally at a distance, startlingly close to the viewer. The works refer to King Lear of British legend, the main character in one of Shakespeare’s tragedies. A tale of honesty, betrayal and reconciliation.
